"Holy Tears" is a single by American post-metal band Isis. It was released in 2008 by Ipecac Recordings on CD and vinyl format, the latter limited to 2000 copies.[2] It is their first ever single, taken from their 2006 album In the Absence of Truth. Instead of being released for commercial success, it was created in celebration of Isis' tenth anniversary along with "Not in Rivers, but in Drops".[2] Its original release on February 5, 2008 had to be recalled due to the title track being inadvertently replaced by "Wrists of Kings", also on In the Absence of Truth.[3]
The enhanced CD contains a video, directed by Dominic Hailstone. It depicts a man, played by Douglas Pledger, leaping from a building in a suicide bid, and as he hits the floor, imagery depicting an embryo and his subsequent death.[4]
Punknews.org deemed it one of the strongest songs from what was regarded as an album of mixed quality.[5]
All tracks written by Isis.
The live version was recorded by Greg Moss at Continental Airlines Arena, East Rutherford, New Jersey, on October 6, 2006. It also features Justin Chancellor of Tool on bass guitar and effects.[6]
